The book aims at finding out the history of tribes through ages and their ab-originality, their lifestyles and status in Jharkhand and reviewing the tribal development program with a view to identify the factors responsible for constraints in development of tribes in Jharkhand. The present study has been divided into seven chapters dealing with the problem of tribes both at the theoretical as well as empirical levels.

The first chapter, ‘History Of Indian Tribes’ deals with the concept of ‘Tribes, Tribal history and Tribal development programs in India.

The second chapter, ‘Tribal Societies’ attempts to describe the life style of tribes and their status in Jharkhand.

The third chapter, ‘Tribal Problems’, explains the problems faced by the tribes of Jharkhand.

The fourth chapter ‘Tribal Development Efforts’ attempts to make study of the initiatives taken by central government, state government and other organizations for the development of tribes in Jharkhand.

The chapter five, ‘Materials and Methods’, highlights the statement of the problem, objectives of the study, hypothesis of the study, methods of data collection and profile of Seraikella-Kharswan district of Jharkhand.

The sixth chapter, ‘Results and Discussions’, examines critically the ground realities in Jharkhand on the basis of field study.

The seventh chapter, ‘Conclusions and Suggestions’ highlights the summary of findings, conclusion of the whole study with suggestions.

The present study has both academic and practical significance. It helps the academicians and researchers to develop deeper and new insights into the overall performance of development of tribes. The present study is also helpful for the students of ‘Tribal Studies’, ‘Anthropology’ and ‘Sociology’.
