The discipline of geography, with its history stretching over many centuries, has evolved as an integrating field of knowledge assimilating information from various schools of thought from ancient to modern times. The contemporary methodology and the subject matter of geography is a reflection of this assemblage and evolution. The present book, based on the project report entitled ‘Ancient Tradition in Geography – The Western and Oriental Perspective’ (ICSSR) traces the history of the evolution of geography to antiquity when the discipline was still at its infancy. The evolutionary period of discipline witnessed the parallel developments in both the western and oriental worlds of civilization. The work was undertaken with the purpose to understand the nature of developments in its initial stage of formation. The knowledge of geographical nature has infiltrated through the past till present in the form of certain fields of learning, terminologies, concepts and techniques. The work sought to acknowledge these infiltration.
The work is a contribution to the field of historical geography and is of academic interest to the students of geography, history and allied disciplines.
